First Week of Kindergarten

Our first week is over. True, it was short and sweet, and most of the hard stuff is out of the way. My class is amazing! They are kind, fun, and have already begin their learning. Here are a few things we did this week:

We had our first try at the dice. Students worked in partners to roll and match their dice to the pictures.

Our shape this week was circle. In addition to making Mr. Circle, we colored circles based on size. Great job!

Our number this week was 0. We wrote zero, counted to zero (which isn't easy!) and learned about Zero the Hero. Our fun food this week was making Zero the Hero from a donut (he is often mistaken by the other numbers as a donut...), a fruit roll-up for the mask, and M&M eyes! Yum!

Shape Pals!

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Shape-Pals-2020541

This is a cute craftivity set to use while you are teaching shapes. I teach one shape a week and we make these little guys to get a hands-on approach. They also label that shape pal with the side and vertices, which is easy to count, because they are holding the shape in their hands!

Shapes included are:
1. Circle                         6. Oval/Ellipse
2. Square                       7. Trapezoid
3. Triangle                     8. Rhombus/Diamond
4. Rectangle                  9. Star
5. Hexagon                   10. Octagon

Kindergarten Shapes

I have a new shape unit for this coming school year. This unit can be used in both Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten! Every year I am frustrated with the type of activities I have for teaching flat and solid shapes. I never have everything I want to teach all on one page. So, I made some! Each shape study page has a sentence, a tracing element, a picture element and a writing element. It is my hope that by using all of these elements together in one lesson the information will sink in faster and make more sense in comparison with solid shapes.

Each shape has it's own shape study page. There are also several bonus activities throughout the unit. There are posters for each flat and solid shape and a fun shape cracker mini booklet at the end. Yum!

Enjoy!

Hexagons!

I have been teaching Kindergarten for 8 years now. (Holy cow!!! 8 years!!) Anyway, the Common Core standards are having me teach a brand new shape this year. And, while I don't mind, it is not easy finding resources for this particular shape. I am talking about.......the HEXAGON! Yes, the shape that looks like an octagon, but isn't. Sure, the kids all know the octagon. They love the octagon. And here I am with the hexagon. And I have 40 little eyeballs looking at me like, "hey, lady, that's an octagon....not whatever you said." So we count the sides. We count the corners. We compare to an octagon. Then they get it.....finally. And we do a tasty craft. And once they do this craft, they LOVE the hexagon. It's called the Honeycomb Hexagon and another K teacher at my school came up with it.

We used Honeycombs cereal and it was yummy! Honeycombs go on all 6 corners and one in the middle (for the bumble bees, my students told me). Grab the activity sheet here.
